Determining Methods Used By Prospective Teachers Of Social Studies In Teaching About Historical Topics

Abstract


Attainments about history and historical topics constitute one of important parts of Social Studies curricula. This curricula prepared with a constructivist approach should be applied in the light of accurately chosen methods. Performing social studies course whose one of main objectives is training active citizen through using accurate methods will enable historical attainments, being present within the curriculum, to be realized more accurately. Students attainments results in the application of the correct method of historical topics easy to learn and will do better bindings with their daily lives. Therefore, students will learn historical topics more easily and make better associations with their daily lives. In this study which was conducted in the light of this purpose, practice files prepared by Social Studies Teacher Training students of Sakarya University in the courses of Teaching Practice I and II were subjected to document analysis. It was found out that prospective teachers did not use the methods and techniques sufficiently necessary for an effective social studies course.
